The concept for this show is simple - ever wonder how music gets made?
We took this premise, and decided to put a load of great musicians in our Studio to jam with each other. You can see a Pilot demo on Vimeo here. So where's the hook? Well, none of these guys had played together before, and they had to improvise original songs based on instructions we gave them during the Session!
For the Pilot Session, we had US guitarist supreme Ben Prevo in the house, Brazilian Andre Antunes from the Republic of Loose on drums, UK ex-pat Gavin Povey on keys, Polish DJ Matjazz on decks/scratching, Kenyan JoJo on improvised rhymes/lyrics and Dubliner Darragh Dennis on bass.
The Session begins gently enough, with Ben taking the newly formed band through some of his excellent Blues workouts, but quickly diverges into something that is truly unique, organic, and happening before your eyes, warts and all.
What emerges is the talent of these people, and their adaptability and love of their craft. Following the Session, we interview the players (graded to a nice Black & White), and find out what draws them to music, their chosen instrument, advice on how to get started, how to keep going, and what they loved and hated about their time on the Black & White sessions.
In a subtler way, we demonstrate that music is an artform that, in its finer moments, knows no boundaries. It helps to establish similarities rather than differences. The greatest achievement of our desire for communion and expression emerge.
Black & White. A simple, new departure for exciting music programming.
